What does a full car service include?

A full service covers an oil and filter change, brake inspection, tyre checks, fluid top-ups, battery test and a diagnostic scan. We check steering, suspension, lights and wipers too, then report anything that needs attention.

Every full service starts with fresh oil and a new oil filter, matched to your engine’s specification. Air, fuel and pollen filters are checked and changed as needed. The brakes get a proper look, pads, discs and fluid, and we check tyre condition, pressures and tread depth on all four corners and the spare.

The car also goes on the latest Launch diagnostic equipment, which reads fault codes from the engine, ABS and other systems before they turn into breakdowns. You get a plain rundown of anything we found, with a price for any extra work. Many customers pair a full service with a pre-NCT check so the test day holds no surprises.

How often should I service my car?

Once a year or every 15,000 km, whichever comes first, suits most cars. Older cars, diesels doing short runs and hard-working vans often need an interim service in between. Your handbook gives the exact interval for your model.

An NCT cert only proves the car was roadworthy on test day. It is not a service, and stretching oil changes between tests is how engines wear out early. A yearly service protects the engine, keeps the service history stamped and holds the car’s resale value when you come to change it.

Not every visit needs to be a full service. If your mileage is low, an interim service, oil, filter and a safety check, keeps things right between full services. Tell us the car’s age, mileage and the driving you do, and we will recommend the cheaper option whenever it is the honest one.

Do you repair cars as well as service them?

Yes. We handle clutches, timing belts, suspension, exhausts, brakes and batteries, plus the faults a diagnostic scan uncovers. If a repair is not worth doing on your car, we will tell you straight before any work starts.

Servicing often uncovers the job, and it is easier for you when the same workshop finishes it. We replace clutches, timing belts and chains, suspension arms, springs and shocks, exhausts, brake components and batteries. Parts are priced up front and the quote is agreed before the car goes back on the lift.

On modern cars, diagnostics matter as much as spanners. Warning lights, misfires, limp mode and electrical faults are traced with proper equipment, not guesswork, on any make. And if you run a Transporter, Crafter, Sprinter or Vito, our van servicing page covers the light commercial side of the workshop.

Common questions.

How much does a car service cost in Navan?

It depends on the car, the engine and whether it is a full or interim service, so we quote before any work starts. The price we agree is the price you pay. If the inspection turns up extra work, we phone you first, and nothing is done without your say-so.

Do you service all makes of car?

Yes, we service and repair all makes and models. The latest Launch diagnostic equipment reads every mainstream marque, and the lifts handle everything from a city hatchback to a long-wheelbase van. If you can drive it to Harristown, we can look after it.

Will servicing outside a main dealer affect my manufacturer warranty?

No. You are free to have your car serviced at an independent garage like Alan Dawson Autoworks in Navan without losing the manufacturer warranty, as long as the maker’s schedule is followed and parts of matching quality are used. We work to the schedule for your exact model and record every service, so your warranty and service history both stay intact.

How long does a service or repair take?

Most services booked into our Harristown workshop are finished the same day. An interim service is quicker than a full one, and repair times depend on the parts needed. We give you an honest estimate when you book, then phone the moment the keys are ready for collection.

Can you collect my car for servicing?

Often, yes, by arrangement. Alan Dawson Autoworks runs its own flatbed, so we can collect a car that will not start anywhere in Meath, or plan a collection and return from your home or work. It depends on the day’s schedule, so mention it when you book and give us a little notice.

Full service or interim service, which does my car need?

A full service once a year suits most cars. An interim covers oil, filter and a safety check, and it works either as a mid-year top-up if you cover high mileage, or as the yearly service if you drive very little. Tell us your annual mileage when you ring the Navan workshop and we will tell you which one is honest for your car.

Is a main dealer service better than an independent garage?

Not for most cars out of warranty. A main dealer and an independent garage work to the same manufacturer schedule, so the difference is usually price and who you deal with. Our Navan workshop runs the latest Launch diagnostic equipment, services all makes and models, and you speak to the person who worked on your car.

Do I need an appointment or can I just call in?
