What is checked in a pre-NCT inspection?

We check the same items the NCT tests: brakes, suspension, steering, lights and headlight aim, tyres, emissions, wipers, seatbelts and the underbody. Anything likely to fail is flagged before your test date.

The NCT looks at safety and emissions, so that is where we look too. On the ramp, we go through the brakes, suspension, steering, wheel bearings, exhaust and underbody. Off the ramp, we check every bulb, the headlight aim, wipers, washers, the horn, seatbelts, tyre tread and pressures, and any warning lights on the dash.

You get a plain list at the end: what would pass, what would fail, and what sits on the borderline. If the car needs work, we tell you what it is and what it costs before anything is touched. The check pairs well with a full car service in Navan, so oil, filters and brakes are all handled in the one visit.

Why do cars fail the NCT?

Common failure points are simple, fixable items: blown bulbs, headlight aim, worn or underinflated tyres, brake wear and high emissions. A pre-check catches them in the workshop, where they are cheapest to put right.

The frustrating part is how avoidable most failure items are. A blown bulb. Headlights aimed a few degrees off. Tyres worn below the legal tread limit. An emissions reading pushed up by an engine that has not seen a service in a while. None of these mean the car is bad. They mean nobody looked before the test did.

A pre-check finds these faults while the car is on our ramp. Bulbs and wipers are minutes of work. Headlight aim is adjusted in the workshop. Tyres are replaced and balanced on site, and a high emissions reading often comes back in line with fresh oil, filters and a proper service. Sort these quietly beforehand and test day becomes a formality.

When should I book a pre-NCT check?

Book one to two weeks before your NCT date. That leaves time to fix anything we find, order parts if needed, and still make your slot at the test centre.

As soon as your test date comes through, get the pre-check in the diary. A week or two of lead time means a worn part can be ordered, fitted and settled before you drive to the centre on the Athboy Road. Leave it until the day before and there is little anyone can do about a part that takes three days to arrive.

The workshop in Harristown runs by appointment, Monday to Friday 8:30 to 18:00 and Saturday 9:30 to 16:00, so a check is easy to fit around work. If you run a van rather than a car, the same thinking applies to the commercial test, and our DOE and CVRT checks cover that side.

Car in side profile with the main service check points marked: engine and diagnostics, brakes, electrical and battery, and tyres and alignment

Engine & diagnostics

Fault codes read on the latest Launch diagnostic equipment, so the problem is found rather than guessed at.

Brakes, discs & pads

Pads, discs, lines and handbrake checked and measured against the wear limits.

Electrical & battery

Battery, alternator, starter and lighting tested. The usual reason a car will not start on a cold morning.

Tyres, wheels & alignment

Tread depth, pressures, condition and alignment. Often the difference between passing the NCT and failing it.

Plus suspension, steering, exhaust, air conditioning and the full pre-NCT list. See the pre-NCT check

Common questions.

How long does a pre-NCT check take?

Most cars are checked and back to you the same day. Book a slot and we will confirm timing when you call, it depends on how busy the ramp is. If we find faults, we will quote for the work before anything extra happens.

How much does a pre-NCT check cost?

We quote the price on the phone before you book, and that is what you pay. If the check turns up work that needs doing, you get a separate price for it first. Nothing is repaired without your go-ahead, so the cost never runs away from you.

Can you fix the faults you find?

Yes, that is the point of doing the check in a working garage. Bulbs, wipers, tyres, brakes, suspension parts and emissions issues are all handled on site in Harristown. Where a part has to be ordered, we tell you straight away so there is still time before your test.

Do you do pre-checks for vans and commercials?

Yes. Commercial vans sit the CVRT rather than the NCT, and we prepare vans for that test too. Transporters, Crafters, Sprinters, Vitos and Transits are daily work here, whatever the badge. Book a pre-CVRT inspection the same way, by phone or email.

Is a pre-NCT check the same as the NCT test?

No. The NCT is the official test, run only at an NCTS centre, and it decides whether your car is legally roadworthy. A pre-NCT check is an inspection at our Navan workshop that looks at the same items beforehand, so faults can be fixed before a failure goes on your record.

Where is the NCT centre in Navan?

The Navan test centre is on the Athboy Road, a short drive from our workshop in Harristown. Book your pre-check a week or so before your slot, get any faults sorted with us, then head over to the centre with the car ready for inspection.

What if my car has already failed the NCT?

Bring us the failure sheet. It lists exactly what the testers found, and we work through it item by item. A retest that needs the test lane carries a fee, so it pays to arrive with every listed fault fixed and nothing new waiting to be found.
