What should I do when my car breaks down?

Get the car off the live lane if you safely can, switch on your hazard lights, stand well back from traffic, then call (086) 446 1672. We will confirm your location and get a flatbed moving.

On a motorway, pull onto the hard shoulder, exit on the passenger side and wait behind the barrier, uphill of the car. Never attempt a repair on the hard shoulder. If you are in a live lane and cannot move, stay belted with hazards on and tell us that first, it changes how we respond.

Once you call, we will ask where you are (an Eircode, motorway junction or landmark all work), what the vehicle is, and what happened. You will get an honest arrival estimate, not a guess. If the fault is something small like a flat battery or a wheel change, we can often sort it at the roadside and save you the tow altogether.

Do you tow vans and commercial vehicles?

Yes. We recover cars, vans and light commercial vehicles on a full-size flatbed, including loaded work vans, and we can bring them to our workshop or any garage you choose.

A large share of our recovery work is working vans: Transporters, Crafters, Sprinters, Vitos and Transits. We know what a van on its side of the weight limit needs, and the bed, straps and winch are rated for it.

If your van is your livelihood, ask about recovery straight into our own workshop in Harristown. One phone call covers the lift, the diagnosis and the repair, so you are back earning sooner.

How much does breakdown recovery cost?

It depends on distance and vehicle type, so we price each job on the phone before we move, clearly and up front. No hidden charges, no surprises at the roadside.

The price we quote is the price you pay. Distance, vehicle size and time of day are what move it, and we will tell you exactly what you are paying for before the truck leaves the yard.

Planned moves are cheaper than emergencies. If the car has failed at home and there is no rush, book the recovery a day ahead and we will fold it into an existing route where we can.

Common questions.

What areas do you cover for breakdown recovery?

We recover vehicles across Meath, Louth, Dublin, Westmeath and Cavan, including the M1, M2, M3 and M50 corridors. Based in Navan, we are minutes from the N51 and M3. Not sure if you are in range? Call and we will tell you straight.

Is the Alan Dawson recovery line really answered 24/7?

Yes. The recovery line for Alan Dawson Autoworks in Navan is answered around the clock, every day of the year, including nights, weekends and bank holidays. The workshop keeps its own hours, but a breakdown never has to wait for morning.

What vehicles can you recover?

Cars, vans, 4x4s and light commercial vehicles, any make or model. Our flatbed covers Meath, Louth, Dublin, Westmeath and Cavan, and handles everything from a city runabout to a loaded Sprinter. For anything unusual, call and describe it, and we will give you a straight yes or no.

Can you bring my car to my own garage?

Of course. We deliver recovered vehicles to any garage, home or business address you choose. Many customers have theirs brought straight to our own workshop in Harristown so diagnosis starts the same day.

Should I call my insurance breakdown cover or a local recovery service?

Either works, and it depends what matters to you. Cover you have already paid for costs nothing extra at the roadside, but the job is passed to whichever contractor is free. Ringing a local operator direct means you know who is coming, roughly how far away they are, and where your car goes afterwards.

Can I book a recovery in advance?

Yes, and it usually costs less than an emergency call-out. Scheduled recoveries suit failed NCTs, non-runners bought at auction, or a car that needs moving between addresses. Call with the details and we will arrange a time.

Is my car insured while on your truck?

Yes. Alan Dawson Autoworks is a fully insured and certified recovery operator, and your vehicle is covered from the moment we load it until it is delivered at the address you choose. Loading is done slowly and properly, which is why our accident recovery work is damage-free.

Stuck? Call now.

The line is answered day and night. Tell us where you are and what happened, and a flatbed starts moving.
